OKCPS students art
(Mike Allen)

This is kind of what I imagine a beginning art class looks like in 2019. I know it won’t quite be this way for the elementary OKCPS students who could experience a full-time art teacher for the first time if the district’s Pathway to Greatness changes pass.

If the district commits full-time art teachers to all elementary OKCPS students, it will be an enlightening and fun experience all the same. Side note: I think there’s an argument to be made for an Adobe Creative Cloud class early on in education, but that’s for another time.

I have a bit of bias here, as I was interested in art from a preschool age. But looking back at my public education, I feel like art, P.E., and music were major parts of balancing my young mind with the likes of math and grammar. That rounded education helped me understand just how many opportunities exist in the world. Art classes provided “light bulb” moments for me and a bunch of other kids I knew.

I would like to look forward to more kids finding their light bulbs soon.
