For the first time in a long time
by Joshua David Gray
Today I drive my aunt for the first time
She has a license and can drive fine
If it wasn’t for the morphine
She can feel every turn and incomplete stop
And even I notice the car bump and hop
But she winces from the pain in her gut
She is cut
So
We
are
slow
And the impatience is replaced by
I’m so sorry
Is this too fast
Which way should we go
And she smiles and says thank you
And I say
No
thank you
Because I’m no longer in a rush
And I can feel the breeze
And I can hear the car hush
And the sun shines here and there on us
As my aunt and I converse
under the shade of an oak tree
For the first time
in a long time
I have time
And it doesn’t have me
