Short-form video-sharing service Vine announced today that it plans to phase out its mobile app. Founded in June 2012 and acquired by Twitter just months later, a vague press release on Medium revealed mainly that, while the mobile app will be discontinued in the coming months, users will still be able to access and download their video loops from the website, Vine.co.
From the release:
We value you, your Vines, and are going to do this the right way. You’ll be able to access and download your Vines. We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website.
In light of this announcement, NonDoc finds it pertinent to note that we have had a Vine account since December 2015. In that time, we’ve managed to accrue more than 15,700 loops across our collection of 26 posts. While that may sound like an impressive amount of loops, it should be noted that, for context, one single Vine from a popular user such as comedian Will Sasso or French video artist Anne Horel can garner several thousand loops in a matter of hours and hundreds of thousands of loops over the years.
Suffice to say, we entered as newbs and remained newbs straight through to the end, amassing a measly 36 followers in the course of exploring what this rather peculiar and niche medium could offer us as a fledgling online startup.
Having said that, we wanted to take the opportunity to share with you some of our better efforts at creating video loops with a six-second max runtime, because ’twas better to have Vined and flopped (relatively speaking, at least) than to have never Vined at all.
