NonDoc.com will host Tussle at the Tower, a public debate between Oklahoma County Sheriff candidates, from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the Tower Theatre. We are working with partners who share the belief that the public is best served when political candidates appear on stage with one another answering questions about important issues.
All three candidates — acting GOP Sheriff P.D. Taylor, Democrat Mike Hanson and independent Ed Grimes — have confirmed their attendance at the debate, which will feature questions from a panel of professional journalists.
Co-sponsored by the non-partisan groups Let’s Fix This and the Oklahoma Women’s Coalition, the Aug. 23 debate will be free to the public.
“Let’s Fix This is thrilled to partner in hosting this event,” said Andy Moore, Let’s Fix This executive director. “Public debates such as this educate voters about issues and the candidates themselves, creating a sense of openness and transparency in our government. We hope it also helps people feel better informed and more confident when they cast their votes in the election.”
Cori Loomis, co-chairwoman of the Oklahoma Women’s Coalition, said her organization appreciates civic engagement.
“Education through civic engagement like this debate is so important in our state,” Loomis said. “Oklahoma’s high female incarceration rate and domestic violence crisis are both areas that the Oklahoma County Sheriff can impact long-term. It is so important that all citizens, but especially women, are engaged in this election and other local races to help bring change to Oklahoma.”
Sponsors support fair public debate
To cover costs for the event, NonDoc is working to bring multiple sponsors to the table. Early supporters include FKG Consulting and the Oklahoma County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.
But more sponsors are still needed to ensure the debate’s success. Sponsors will receive a reserved table at the event as well as recognition on posters, event materials, social media and NonDoc.com.
