COMMENTARY
streetcar
(Mike Allen)

I was walking in Midtown a few nights ago, as people do, and I couldn’t help but notice all of the new streetcar tracks laid into the street.

A strange thought occurred: How can such a simple thing as reliable — albeit limited — public transportation around the downtown area feel so refreshing? Could we really be that starved for something like this in Oklahoma City?

I know the buses have their place, but this seems… different. We’ve known this was coming for some time; it’s one of the main reasons I voted for MAPS 3. Until the streetcar is up and running, however, I don’t think people will quite understand how much of a shift in thinking toward transportation this could be. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for future expansion of the route, so perhaps one day I can go completely car-less.
