false flag
(Mike Allen)

This past week may have been the first time I’ve seen the phrase “false flag” thrown around by mainstream news sources in a semi-serious way. The reason? It turns out a guy in Florida — with Oklahoma connections — was mailing suspicious packages to prominent critics of President Donald Trump.

No one was hurt, and none of the devices in the packages went off, thankfully. But that’s just it. The timing, the fact that no one was hurt, and the list of recipients all became evidence of… everything, depending on your political affiliation.

The idea that a person affiliated with Democrats would go so far and risk jail time just to (maybe?) help some national political races in a marginal way seems a bit silly, to say the least. That’s where we are, though. We are a nation full of extreme people thinking about, well, extreme things.
