Sooner Schooner
(Mike Allen)

Since he was retired in 2005 while I was a student at the University of Oklahoma, I have always thought the mascot Top Daug should make a return, and what better time than now?

Two weeks ago, the Sooner Schooner tipped over at an OU football game. The next week, the team lost. Coincidence? Perhaps, but notable nonetheless. I honestly can’t think of a better time to re-introduce Top Daug into the Sooner mascot fold, even though he was traditionally focused on OU basketball games.

I know not all of NonDoc’s readers are OU fans, so I’ll explain this in as simple of terms as I can. Top Daug was the most hype/best mascot in OU athletics history. For some reason — still unknown to me to this day — the OU Athletic Department decided to do away with Top Daug in favor of two cartoon horses that no one liked at the time of their unveiling, and which the university already had live versions of.

So I think the Sooner Schooner incident a couple of weeks ago is a sign. It’s time. Bring back Top Daug.
