Are you owed money by the Equifax settlement? Are you sure you haven’t checked 12 times yet?
In case you haven’t been reminded by every news outlet all this past week, Equifax is paying a settlement to everyone affected by their 2017 data breach, and you (yes you!) could be entitled to some money as a result. Most of the payouts I’ve seen so far have been for $125, which is a large amount to some, but a “meh” figure for others.
I’m not sure if I’m the only one who does this, but I tend to look at sums of money in terms of how much of a certain product it could get me. It helps put things in a real-world perspective, I feel. $20? That’s like five meals from Taco Bell, so $125 is quite the bounty when looking at it this way.
Still, data privacy — as has been covered on this site before — is a growing concern with more and more business conducted online. I’m not sure if the punishment fits the crime in this Equifax settlement, but I’d say take the money and hope for the best in the future.
