ransomware
(Mike Allen)

Early this past week, Oklahoma City Public Schools shut down its network owing to a ransomware attack.

My first thought upon hearing the news was that perhaps it could be chalked up to a prank. These ransomware hackers are asking for money from an Rentity that has little. Perhaps the thinking is that OKCPS would be a desperate target given all of the ups and downs in recent years? Perhaps they heard about Oklahoma’s recent agreement to spend $157.7 million more on common education than last year? Or, more likely, it’s an individual or group of individuals from far away who haven’t been watching the local news.

In any case, it’s a bad situation, and I hope they get it resolved. OKCPS could use a bit of good news every once in a while.
